POEM OF THE DAY: On Leaving Prison

Fray Luis de León (1528 – 1591).

On Leaving Prison

Here their envy and lies
Locked me behind the gate,
yet glad the humble state
of him withdrawn and wise,
far from the evil world,
in this delightful field,
spending his life alone,
with modest room and board,
with god his sole reward
and jealousies unknown.
