Weekly Read-Along—June 5, 2009: Opening Statement in Defence of Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela (1918 –) is a former South African anti-apartheid activist, lawyer, Nobel Peace Prize winner and former president of South Africa (1994 – 1999).  He joined the African National Congress  in 1944, was arrested for his anti-apartheid activities in 1962, and served 27 years in prison, mostly on Robben Island.

This week’s text is his opening statement at his trial on April 20, 1964.  In addition, the link to his inaugural speech as President of the Democratic Republic of South Africa, May 10, 1994, is given.
