POEM OF THE DAY: Peaceful Eyes My Only Wealth

by Paul Verlaine (1844 – 1896).

Peaceful Eyes My Only Wealth (1880)

Gaspard Hauser sings:

Peaceful eyes my only wealth

Calm orphan I arrived

Innocent

In the cities of men.

At twenty new stirrings—                       5

Love’s fever so-called—

Made women lovely

Me unlovely to them.

Stateless un-kinged

Brave coward                                             10

I went to war to die.

Death turned me down.

Was I born too early?

Or too late?  Or why at all?

People, I’m a pit of pain.                         15

Say prayers for poor Gaspard.
